This morning the solar cycle continues.
Above, the Solar Cycle Sunspot Number Progression shows that we hit a peak over 200, and now we are trending down. However, the magnitude of the activity is still impressive.
Most Active Sunspot in Years!
Auroras likely as most active sunspot in years turns toward Earth

The sunspot region 4366 fired off dozens of powerful solar flares in 24 hours, including the single strongest flare since 2024. Auroras are possible later this week.
Update, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. ET: The monster sunspot region 4366 is now facing Earth, and shows no signs of weakening. It is the most active sunspot of the current solar cycle (cycle 25). NOAA predicts that a glancing blow from a massive CME released toward Earth is likely this week. A minor (G1) geomagnetic storm is predicted to begin on Thursday (Feb. 5), with possible auroras at lower latitudes than usual. Stay tuned for more information.

A massive new sunspot complex, dubbed AR 4294-4296, has emerged on the sun and is facing directly at Earth. The dark patch is on par with the infamous sunspot that birthed the 1859 Carrington Event — but, for now, it’s staying quiet.1
This new sunspot, 4366, is also being compared to the 1859 Carrington Event.
The sunspot, called region 4366, appeared suddenly several days ago and has rapidly grown to roughly half the size of the infamous Carrington Event sunspot, which, in September 1859, fired a flare that triggered the most destructive geomagnetic storm in recorded history.2
