I believe that worship was temporarily removed across the entire Earth. Satan, the serpent of old, the dragon, gave authority to the Beast to battle against those who followed the commands of Jesus Christ. Satan did not want us to worship our Father in Heaven.
In the Exodus story, Moses and YHWH sent 10 plagues upon Egypt. This temporarily stopped the Egyptian priests from worshipping their Egyptian gods. Thus, their gods were powerless in the face of the God of the Jewish people, YHWH. In the same way, a deceiving Beast brought the fear of a “plague” upon the Earth and shut down the churches where people could not bring a “Sacrifice of Praise unto the House of the Lord.”
