What is the symbolism revealed that day?
What was the Mazzroth sign highlighted by the lunar eclipse(s)?
This research will include papers by Dr. Colin Humphreys1, Dr. Graeme Waddington, Department of Metallurgy and Science of Materials, University of Oxford, and Dr. Andrew Steinmann, Professor of Theology and Hebrew at Concordia University, Chicago.
Consensus on the Date of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ
Many scholars, especially the ones noted above, have carefully assembled evidence that Jesus Christ's crucifixion occurred on April 3rd, 33 AD, which was also the Passover Feast of Unleavened Bread. The Passover date, full moon, the reign of Tiberius, historical accounts of a blood moon lunar eclipse on the night of the Crucifixion, and Biblical scripture are used to pinpoint the date systematically to Friday, April 3rd, 33 AD.
Birth Date of Jesus Christ:
The birth date of Jesus Christ varies depending on the date of Herod’s death. Some scholars, including Archbishop James Ussher, use a 5 BC birth date and a 4 BC death of King Herod. Unlike the 5 BC birth year, the hypothesis introduced in this substack uses the astronomical signs in the Virgin and Lion pointing to a 3 BC birth of Jesus and the prominent blood moon in 1 BC before the death of King Herod.
Today, the birth sign can be pinpointed to September 11th, 3 BC. Similar to the April 3rd, 33 AD date of the Crucifixion, we can use modern astronomical software like Stellarium. The evidence for the September 11th, 3 BC date for the birth of Jesus Christ has been researched by:

Blood Moons at Passover 2025 and 33 AD
I received a text from my daughter this past Saturday. “Dad, is there supposed to be a blood moon tonight?” - She sends a short clip of a blood moon rising. That’s strange, so I dug deeper.
The first Sunday after the Paschal or Pink Moon determines Easter. Pink is for the wildflowers that bloom in Spring, not necessarily for the color of the moon. Paschal is a full moon but further away and therefore smaller than a typical full moon. Passover begins at sundown on April 12th, 2025, when the Paschal moon rises over the southeastern horizon, the night of the “blood moon”.
(source: photographed on April 12th, 2025)
The moon first looked blood red, and as it rose in the sky, it turned white. Eyewitnesses in my immediate family all testified that it was a blood moon near the horizon. The term “blood moon” usually refers to a total lunar eclipse like the one on March 13th, 2025. However, in this case, the moon was a shade of blood orange and not a total lunar eclipse. The blood color was probably due to the sun being directly opposite the moon, and the sunlight was filtered by the atmosphere, which only allowed red and orange wavelengths to reach the moon.
Note the actual photo of the blood moon shown at the top right corner, and do you recognize the Mazzaroth sign behind the blood moon? Yes, it is the bundle of barley in the hand of Virgo the Virgin.

On April 12th, 2025, the Paschal blood moon is ~1 degree from Spica, the Seed of the Woman in the Virgin. Is this a sign? Is God reminding mankind to protect the seed, the offspring of the woman? (Genesis 3:15). Is God warning us that Satan and his disembodied spirits of the Nephilim are attempting to corrupt the seed created in the image of God?
On April 3rd, 33 AD, the moon is southeast of the foot of the Virgin with a partial lunar eclipse, which parallels Genesis 3:15, a bite at the heel of the woman. Again, just like April 12th, 2025, astronomically, the setting sun is directly opposite the rising moon, thus, red-orange wavelengths of sunlight were cast upon the moon, resulting in a “blood moon”.
Is this only speculation? Were there eyewitnesses who documented a blood red moon? Humphreys and Waddington reference the ‘Report of Pilate’ in their paper,
The so-called ‘Report of Pilate’, a New Testament apocryphal fragment states, ‘Jesus was delivered to him by Herod, Archelaus, Philip, Annas, Caiphas, and all the people. At his Crucifixion the sun was darkened; the stars appeared and in all the world people lighted lamps from the sixth hour till evening; the moon appeared like blood’3
Humphrey’s also references Cyril of Alexandria (412 AD),
Further evidence is provided by Cyril of Alexandria, the orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria in AD 412. After stating that there was darkness at the Crucifixion he adds, ‘Something unusual occurred about the circular rotation of the moon so that it even seemed to be turned into blood’, and notes that the prophet Joel foretold such signs.4
Therefore, Pilate and Cyril of Alexandria document a blood moon the night of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Cyril also documents an unusual occurrence that will be further unpacked, but first, let’s look at the symbolism.
The Blood Moon Symbolism and The Blood Covenant
Humphreys and Waddington make correlations between the blood moon of King Herod and the blood moon at the Crucifixion. They reference the blood moon, written about by Flavius Josephus shortly before the death of King Herod, which was discussed in Part 1.
They conclude the blood moon lunar eclipse at the Crucifixion to be very symbolic,
We have already noted the symbolism of Christ as the Passover lamb and the first fruits. The lunar eclipse may provide further symbolism in that it provides a striking parallel between the Crucifixion and the original Passover. The last plague before the Passover was three days of darkness, ‘darkness that can be felt’ (Ex. 10:21), which again could have been a massive dust storm, or possibly a volcanic ash cloud. The Passover lamb was slain toward the end of Nisan 14. This was followed by blood being smeared on the door frames: ‘the blood will be a sign for you’ (Exodus 12:13). At the Crucifixion there was three hours of darkness, then the Lamb of God died toward the end of Nisan 14. This was followed by the moon ‘turning to blood’, which could have been regarded as ‘a sign for you’.
This symbolism further reveals the omnipotence of God Most High and His Son, Jesus Christ, and the Strength of the Blood Covenant (see The Signs of Jonah).
Partial Lunar Eclipse on April 3rd, 33 AD
Earlier in the second blood moon quote by Cyril of Alexandria, he describes something unusual occurring to the circular “shape or rotation” of the moon. This may be describing the unusual “bite” due to the partial lunar eclipse of the moon, as well as a distortion of the moon’s round shape through the atmosphere at the horizon.
In 1982, before the availability of astronomical software on laptops or PC’s, calculations of the lunar eclipse on April 3rd, 33 AD had to be estimated using mainframe computers and high-end workstations. Humphreys and Waddington cite the following research in their 1982 paper, “The Date of the Crucifixion”,
Figure 1:
Figure 1. Moonrise on Friday, 3 April A.D. 33 as seen from Jerusalem. The effects of atmospheric refraction have been included and give rise to the distorted shape of the moon. The time interval between successive diagrams is 45 seconds. The most probable colours of the moon were: shaded area, red; unshaded area, yellow-orange.
Eyewitnesses of the recent April 12th, 2025, Paschal Passover blood moon also reported a distorted “flattened oval” moon on the horizon.
Humphreys and Waddington write,
At moonrise the initially small yellow-orange region would indicate that the moon had risen, but with most of its visible area 'turned to blood.' If in fact a massive dust storm was responsible for darkening the sun a few hours previously, dust still suspended in the atmosphere would tend to modify the above colours. The nature of this modification would depend upon the size distribution of the particles, but they would probably further darken and redden the moon.
The majority of lunar eclipses pass unnoticed, occurring when we are asleep or indoors. This eclipse however would probably have been seen by most of the population of Israel, since the Jews on Passover Day would be looking for both sunset and moonrise in order to commence their Passover meal. Instead of seeing the expected full Paschal moon rising they would have initially seen a moon with a red 'bite' removed (Fig. 1). The effect would be dramatic. The moon would grow to full in the next half-hour. The crowd on the day of Pentecost would undoubtably understand Peter's words, the moon turning to blood, as referring to this eclipse which they had seen.5
The verse referred to above is from the Book of Acts when Peter gives a sermon at Pentecost,
And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
Acts 2:19-20, ESV6
Scholars debate whether Peter was referring to what they had just seen on the day of the Crucifixion or whether this was a future end times prophecy. Given what we know today, Peter may have been referring to the Crucifixion, which was just witnessed by those he was speaking to, for he did not know at the time when Jesus would return. However, given that our God is omniscient, it may very well refer to both the Crucifixion and future eschatological signs as we see them occurring today.7
A Bite at the Heel
The correlation of the Lunar Eclipse on April 3rd, 33 AD, to the Protevangelium scripture is also revealing and repeats the story arc of Genesis 3:15.
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Genesis 3:15, ESV8
The Greek for bruise is shûwph,
7779. שׁוּף shûwph, shoof; a prim. root; prop. to gape, i.e. snap at; fig. to overwhelm:—break, bruise, cover.9
denoting to gape, i.e., snap at.
On April 3rd, 33 AD, the setting sun on the western horizon is directly opposite the full moon rising. A partial lunar eclipse rises on the eastern horizon in a blood moon. The eclipse would appear as a “bite” taken out of the moon. Notice the position of the moon at the foot of the woman within approximately 10 degrees of the woman’s heel.
Jesus shall bruise Satan’s head, and Satan shall bruise the Seed of the Woman’s heel. At this point, Satan believes He has won the battle. He has taken a “bite” out of the heel of the woman. It’s Friday, but Sunday’s coming!
In Closing
Was there a blood moon on the day Jesus was crucified?
Yes, according to the writings of Pilot and Cyril of Alexandria
There was also a blood moon on April 12th, 2025, the first day of Passover
What is the symbolism revealed that day?
Darkness for 3 hours on the day of the Crucifixion parallels the 3 Days of darkness during the plague of Egypt.
Blood on the doors of Passover parallels the Blood Moon as a sign and the Blood Covenant of Jesus Christ.
What was the Mazzroth sign highlighted by the lunar eclipse?
April 12th, 2025: The Protevangelium, Genesis 3:15, the blood moon is near Spica, the seed of the woman.
April 3rd, 33 AD: The Protevangelium, Genesis 3:15, as the “bite” out of the blood moon is at the heel of the woman.
